Milestones:
  • 2004.08.23 We're not quite sure how to describe this, but Duvan recently started responding to us when we threaten to chase him. He knows it's a game and will start to laugh and crawl away as fast as he can. Also, when he's heading for a toy, we'll say we're going to get there first, and he'll scoot over as fast as he can to beat us to the toy!
  • 2004.08.23 Marésa and Duvan finally have his naps (and bedtime) where it was before we left the US. He can go to sleep on his own again without needing to be rocked or walked to sleep. We're so thankful, yet so sad for this 7 month interruption in good sleeping habits. At the same time another move is looming over us, one into our new home. Hopefully this will be the last move for a long time to come!
  • 2004.08.24 Duvan now has full understanding of the sign for "Please". We'll say "say please", or "how do you ask?" or "ask nicely?", and he'll vigorously perform the "please" sign if he wants to have something. It's so so cute!
  • 2004.08.24 Duvan started climbing down stairs and even the couches today, nicely turning around and scooting down on his tummy. The interesting thing about this is that we didn't really teach him to do it, bar one or two demonstrations some weeks ago. Ouma Martie also mentioned that she tried to teach him to climb down the bed backwards. Today, all of a sudden, and with no recent instruction, he just pulled it off!
  • 2004.09.02 Duvan gave his first sideway step today! He has this rather large inflatable ottoman that he picked up from the ground, stood with it by himself, and gave one or two steps sideways before sitting down again. :)
  • 2004.09.03 Duvan is now standing up by himself all the time. He also gets up from sitting all by himself without needing to pull himself up. We walk with him quite often, and though he still feels uncomfortable walking, we can't help but feel that it won't be long before he's got the courage to give that first real step.

Duvan has developed a very interesting relationship with the vacuum cleaner. It's quite funny, but he can easily spend half an hour sitting with the vacuum cleaner, hitting it every now and then and shouting at us to make it do something. See, there's an amazing praise report associated with the vacuum cleaner. Marésa was on the phone one morning, when she noticed that Duvan raced up the stairs behind her. She remembered the vacuum cleaner was on the first landing (about 10-12 steps up), and knew that he would head straight there, so she was not too worried about him. Well, Duvan sure went all the way to the vacuum, stood up against it and immediately turned it on. He's done this before, though it's always been unplugged, so that nothing would happen if he hit the switch. This time around though it of course came on, and Duvan got such a fright that he fell over backwards, straight down the stairs. Praise God almighty though, for as Marésa heard the vacuum come on, she threw down the phone and immediately leapt up the staircase, and caught Duvan on the third step, rolling down. He had a little bruise on his nose bridge, and had a tiny cut on his nose, but was completely fine. Marésa however, sat and cried with him for some time, even after he had already been pointing at everything going "Tah!", even wanting to go to the vacuum cleaner again! He's still so intrigued by the cleaner though, and will still go search it out from where we store it, sit by it and just pat it, peek at us around the corner and constantly calls us to come and play with this noisy thing!

Duvan's favorite activity in the kitchen is to unpack the Tupperware closet! This particular evening he went at it with quite a lot of vigor!

Duvan has the cutest way of carefully putting food into his mouth. Here he's starting take care of a piece of spaghetti that Marésa just handed him.

We've mentioned above about Duvan falling asleep by himself. During the day, Marésa will put him in his crib, tell him to lie down and go to sleep, and then normally sits next to the crib for a while, softly talking to him or singing. Most of the time he lies down and falls asleep after some complaining, but this afternoon he got up again and chatted with her for a while, sitting inside the crib. When he eventually fell asleep, and she got up to go out the room, she noticed that he had fallen straight over. Can you imagine sleeping like that?

Here Duvan is doing another "Taph!", which means "Gone!". He had just hid the tennis ball underneath the couch, and promptly came up and announced it as "Gone!".
